St. Lucia — Island Freshness

Arrival & First Impressions

Southward, the Pitons rose like emerald sentinels as the Seadreamer I approached St. Lucia. Fishing boats bobbed in the harbor, nets heavy with the morning’s catch. Pete clapped his hands, already hungry, while Charlie Chuck adjusted his glasses and muttered about trade in bananas, spices, and cocoa.

“Salt and sweet—the sea and the sun!” Pete shouted as the first tray of green figs and saltfish appeared on the dock. Charlie nodded, impressed despite himself.

Adventures / Immersion

1. Castries Market
Stalls overflowed with cinnamon sticks, cocoa balls, and bunches of bananas. Pete tried juggling coconuts, sending one rolling into a spice stand. Charlie discussed fair-trade cocoa with a vendor, scribbling figures while Pete licked sugar from his fingers.

2. Sulphur Springs Mud Baths
At Soufrière, Pete painted himself in stripes of gray mud like a carnival tiger. Charlie watched with folded arms until a local persuaded him to try, leaving neat lines of clay across his cheeks. “Field research,” he murmured, as Pete roared dramatically.

3. Banana Plantation
Pete swung from stalks like a mischievous child, while Charlie marveled at the organized systems of planting, harvesting, and export. “Efficiency can be beautiful,” Charlie admitted. “Not as beautiful as bananas flambé!” Pete countered.

4. Gros Islet Street Party
Soca beats shook the night air. Pete spun clumsily until he toppled into a food stall, earning laughter and a free skewer of grilled fish. Charlie sipped cocoa tea slowly, observing the balance of joy and commerce.

5. Fishing Village Feast
At a small cove, locals fried accra faster than Pete could eat them. Children challenged him to a contest; he lost spectacularly but grinned with flour-dusted cheeks. Charlie raised his cup of cocoa tea. “To freshness, and to community.”
